If you’re anything like the people who come to me for relationship advice I bet you’d like to know the number one mistake that both men and women make when it comes to dating. Even better than that I bet you’d like to know the solution to that mistake. If that’s a piece of relationship advice that interests you then please read on.

I’ve been giving relationship advice through my coaching for enough years to spot the patterns in how people make something that’s fairly natural very complicated.

The number one mistake that men and women continually make is that they fail to communicate their interest in members of the opposite sex. It sometimes appears that the more my clients fancy someone the less likely they are to let them know. This leads to a situation where no one has any real idea of what is going on. So I want to teach you a couple of things that are going to make your life much more exciting and maybe even a little more erotic.

Baboons In Heat

According to Leil Lowndes, when a female baboon comes into heat she strolls over to a male she likes, bends over pressing her butt into his face, then grabs him by the hand and marches him off into the jungle to procreate. Now, that particular technique is not a piece of relationship advice I suggest you use but you might want to keep it in mind. There are some subtler, yet very clear, signals that you need to learn and remember that will allow you to let someone know you’re interested.

Women, you need to know that at least 2/3rds of every romantic encounter are initiated by you. The man may like to think of himself as a hunter but the truth is that he’s fairly cautious (downright terrified in most cases!) about getting rejected by a woman he likes. This might seem like a stupid game to you but please pay attention; I’ve had women go from zero offers of dates in over 3 months to two in one day. Once you know a guy is interested there are 3 top ways of getting the attention you deserve. The first is to smile broadly across the room to the guy. You might even have to do it two or three times but he will eventually approach you if he’s interested. See the tips below for more ideas.

So, you spot someone you are interested in, but how do you know if they’re interested in you? It’s easy.

Do Not Stare!

Men, if she’s interested she’s going to look at you. So when you walk into a room take your time and pay attention. People will generally check out a newcomer, if there’s someone you like or are attracted to then keep looking, subtle now, don’t stare. If she looks back in under a minute then she’s interested and at some point soon you should introduce yourself to her before you manage to convince yourself she wasn’t actually looking at you. Once you get to talking to her there are a number of things you need to be looking out for so you can know if she’s 1. Really not that interested 2. Would like to get to know you better or 3. Gagging for it. (Trust me, they’re out there!) Check out the tips below for more information.

Cow Poke Stance?

Women, it’s really very simple, if he has come over to talk to you I recommend you assume he’s interested. As far as he’s concerned he’s just traversed the fires of hell by approaching you so let’s hope he thinks you’re worth it. There are a couple of classic signals he could be giving off. Where are his hands? If he’s shifted into what’s referred to as ‘Cow Poke’ stance, hands-on-hips, fingers pointing to his groin then you know he’s trying to get your attention. It really is that blatant if you just start paying attention.

If you know what you are looking for people’s bodies give away their secrets all the time. It’s not rocket science, it’s not Jedi mind tricks it’s just knowing what to look for. Not only that, once you know what you’re looking for you can ramp up your own ability to put out the signals that speak directly to someone’s subconscious and get them gravitating in your direction. Now that’s relationship advice worth seeking!

Bonus Tips

Another great way to communicate interest, in a guy, is to look him in the eyes and run your fingers through your hair. It’s called autoerotic touching and it works really, really well.

Guys, if you’re talking to a woman and she starts running her fingers through her hair or stroking her arms or thighs you can assume she’s interested. The message her body is giving out is this. 1. She’d like you to notice what she’s touching 2. She may well be inviting you to touch her there sometime in the future.

Pay attention to what people are pointing to as they talk to you, where do their feet point, where are their fingers pointing? If they were naked what would their body be saying to you? A lot of seduction and attraction is deeply subconscious, if you can get even a little more conscious about it you’ll have people approaching you and they won’t even know how you did it.

If he or she touches you in any way then you can assume interest. A great trick is to stop the conversation, touch their arm and say ‘I’m sorry, but in the excitement of meeting you I managed to miss your name.’ Two things happen here, one you’ve communicated excitement, and secondly, you’ve touched them which moves your relationship forward a notch.

Let’s Not Do Dinner Sometime

The first point I’d like to make is that if you’re meeting someone for the first time then the biggest mistake you can make is agree to dinner. I don’t know about you but my time is extraordinarily valuable and the last thing I would do is risk sitting down for dinner with someone who’s practically a stranger. If it’s a drag for starters imagine how big a drag it will be by dessert. My dating advice revolves around a massive dating campaign. You’re looking for at least 3 meetings a week if you’re really firing on all cylinders and clearly dinner is too much commitment. Stop wasting time on people you’re not already sold on.

You Want A Man By Your Side

The dating advice clients that talk about the process being fun tend to only agree to much less intense meetings. Sitting opposite a stranger is stressful for most of us so pick things you actively enjoy. In my experience, even meeting for coffee is too intense. One thing worth keeping in mind is that most men are uncomfortable sat opposite a stranger, it’s just the way we are wired. The smartest thing you can do, as a man or woman is to figure out something you can do side by side. This would include things like walking in parks, by the river, or even around a museum or gallery. Having these kinds of meetings works in your favor in several ways:

You’re doing something you might even do on your own so it’s fun. This means you don’t get stuck in regret about wasted time.
You’re getting some exercise. Calories burned rather than ingested. Given you’re dating this is a good thing.
You may end up doing something totally new and fun. Enriching your experience of life. In-store Ice Climbing anyone?
If this is your first meeting then the dating advice I offer is just accept that in some way it’s going to be a little stressful. It’s also worth keeping in mind that regardless of how it looks the other person is likely to be just as stressed as you. If you’re not careful then you end up infecting each other and starting out very edgy. This is not an excuse to start heading for the bar.

Get A Firm Grip

The quickest way of dealing with this is to get a grip. Now there’s something I didn’t get to say enough as a therapist. Your life would be easier if you can focus on the reality of the situation you are in. You’re meeting up with a stranger who is also meeting up with a stranger. If you cut them a little slack then you’ll probably find they do the same for you.

The first meeting is just about figuring out whether you can be friends with this person or not. And then hopefully get a sense of whether you actually fancy them enough to pursue the relationship any further. The funny thing is that most of that becomes clear in the first five minutes and it’s not got too much to do with what you say and is a lot more about who you are. You can have all the fanciest lines and cleverest dating advice tactics but in my experience, people will see through them and get a sense of who you are and what you stand for. The fact that this happens so quickly is actually very good news. Sometimes you just don’t click, no chemistry, no fault of your own, it’s just time to move on. If you’re halfway through your starter when the penny drops you’ve got no polite escape options so do you still want to sit through dinner?

I’m very big on the idea of meeting in the daytime as it seems to allow everyone to feel much more comfortable. It’s totally acceptable to arrange a very short meeting if you’re not sure and then magically be able to stay longer if you really like the person you’ve just met. Just try not to over-do it, “always leave ‘em wanting more”.

Guys, on no account, take strangers to dinner. If you do you absolutely must pay for that first dinner or she’s going to think you cheap. Seriously you can’t win on this one. The bizarre upside is that if you didn’t buy her dinner, and she doesn’t want a relationship with you, you’ve got more chance of a fling. If you’ve no idea why that’s true then you’re still in nappies in my world. If you were a bit brighter I think you’d be paying me for coaching as I could change your life forever. Women, please try to avoid being offended by this tip, you’re more complex than you know.

If you’re not filtering from large amounts of interest then your level of exposure is too low. There are so many reasons that this needs to be a mass dating campaign. Not least of which is the fact that you probably still need the practice when it comes to making first impressions or you’d have been snapped up already.

Dating Tips for You

Like it or not, you live in a society that is largely fixated on sex. I’m guessing this isn’t news to you, you’re bombarded with semi-erotic images all day long. Yes, it can be distracting but the good news is that it’s not just the sexual act that people are fixated upon but the promise of sex. Just watch some adverts, they’re clearly not offering you great sex but the suggestion is there. Particularly the ads marketing to the age group of most of the dating advice clients I work with.

Warning: Contention alert.

This is going to be contentious and if it bothers you then please just bear with me. I hate to say this but it seems to me that quite a few of the women that end up taking my courses or working privately with me aren’t exactly relaxed around being sexual beings or even talking about it. It’s almost as if being out of a relationship means that their bodies become off-limits. This can actually be quite literal, one of my female clients, Julie, ( name changed) was so crushed by the loss of a relationship that she slept fully clothed as the feeling of being naked and alone was unbearable. She really just didn’t want to know about her body as it just reminded her of how alone she felt.

Guide-To-FlirtingI believe we all need to take time to get over a significant relationship but women tend to wait too long before getting back into dating. The standard guide is that we need about a month to get over a person for each year we were together. If it’s taking longer than that then it may be wise to get some assistance. Julie had been in this phase for 18 months and even she knew she had to change.

Time To Give Out The Glow

Peta Heskell in ‘Flirt Coach’ talks about ‘Giving out the glow.’ She’s the only person I’ve seen dare to say in print that there’s a certain energy that comes off a sexually active person that people find attractive. Sometimes if you’ve been single a while it’s as if the sexual pilot light goes out and you just get busy with just getting on with life. Having spoken with clients about this for years I know that this is a real phenomenon. Julie had been working with me for a couple of months and getting nowhere fast on the dating front.

She couldn’t understand why she was getting no interest from men or being asked out, and frankly having seen her photo neither could I. When we talked about sex, however, it turned out that she hadn’t had sex with a partner for over 18 months and felt sad and a bit guilty about masturbation so she wasn’t doing that either. She had managed to turn into someone who came across as totally A-sexual. Which most men interpret as either not interested or just not interesting. What it appears to boil down to is that if you’re going to live like a nun people will treat you like one. No offense intended to my nun readers but don’t be holding your breath waiting for a guy to make a move.

Turning The Light Back On

Through internet dating, Julie met a man who she fancied but clearly wasn’t husband material. He expressed an interest in having sex, something along the lines of ‘ I doesn’t really see a future for us but I’ve got some very exciting fantasies about you.’ Given her desire to reawaken her sexual spark she decided to go with it. The week after, having changed nothing else, she was getting more male attention than she’d had in the last six months.

Having taught Yoga for so many years in the past. I see things most people miss. Women who used to walk into class looking a little shut down or grey, one day, generally after a couple of months, there is a significant change; they brighten up, stand differently and suddenly the men in the room are finding them a lot more distracting. Sometimes it’s because they’ve just got a boyfriend and their feel-good hormones are raging and sometimes it’s just because they’ve reconnected with their bodies. Trauma And Abuse

So what am I saying? I hear you ask. If you feel you need to, then it’s time to reawaken your sexual energy. Fortunately, intercourse isn’t the only way to reawaken your sexuality, you have lots of great options. I’m sure you can use your imagination to think up some alternatives. Dreaming up new ways has got to be better than the work that I’ve interrupted you from ;-). If the whole idea is distasteful for you then you’re going to need help, it’s not my intention to burn any bridges here but let me just say some of you are not single by accident whether you know it or not. You may have some trauma or abuse incident in your past that’s really holding you back and I’d be happy to help.

So what I’m talking about here is just one area of dating advice on what I refer to as the dating wheel, it’s one element of your market value. Top Dating Tips

Decide to get physical. It’s important to get back into your body in such a way you become excited about it. Ideally, it would become something you view as such a great treasure that any bloke who gets to share it, with you, is truly blessed. It may be that you start Yoga, Salsa, Ceroc (the ultimate choice for those of us with two left feet), or maybe even a belly dancing class. Although given you’re out there looking for a partner I suggest you go for partnered type dance classes because if nothing else you’re going to get at least a little physical contact you like. Just having your hand held can be very good for your spirit.

Start to play around sexually. Some of my clients are very shy around the subject of sex and have lost partners on the basis of not being adventurous enough. One of my jobs is to free them up a little, please keep in mind I only work on the phone so there’s nothing ‘nasty’ going on! I believe there’s a whole language around sex and seduction, either you can speak it or you can’t. As a woman, it ups your market value hugely with most men if you can. Pick up one of the more tasteful erotic novels and see if there’s anything you can learn from it. Aim for the stuff written by women for women, at least in the beginning. You would do well to learn the linguistical loveliness of luscious language.

If you can become his favorite fantasy without feeling like you’re lowering yourself then you’ll be married in weeks. There are ways of having conversations with a man, particularly if you are really, really interested that guarantee you his full attention. Learn this and you’ll be kicking butt and taking names.
